Extra Care Housing is for older people aged 55+ with care and/or support needs who wish to remain in their own home and to lead as independent a life as possible as they get older. Schemes are made up of individual apartments with personal care and housing support available 24 hours a day, enabling people to maintain their privacy and independence in a safe environment. Any care is flexible and can increase or reduce according to current care need. Schemes provide a social environment if that is what people are seeking. Equally, people can do their own thing in their private apartment. More information about Wiltshire Council's approach to Extra Care Housing may be found at the council's website here.
Extra Care Housing Schemes are intended to provide homes for active older people in addition to those with care needs. People do not need a care need to live in a scheme but if they develop care needs later, care is on site to meet that need. The qualifying criteria are to benefit from living with other people in an environment which will have rooms for social activities and to have a connection to Wiltshire Council's area based on own residency (2 years+) or close family members' residency (adult children, adult siblings, parents - 5 years+). Owning a home or having capital is not a barrier to registering with Homes4Wiltshire for Extra Care Housing.
Particular Extra Care Housing schemes usually provide specially adapted accommodation, suitable for wheelchair users, with hoist facilities and an assisted bathroom. Schemes vary in their facilities but many have communal facilities for residents’ use, including -
• Lounge
• Cafe
• Hair and beauty salon
• Activity room
• Guest room (for relatives to stay overnight)
• Mobility scooter store
• Laundry room
• Assisted bathroom and treatment room

When you apply for housing, you agree to be assessed for extra care housing by a member of the Adult Social Care Team, who will determine the level of care and support that you require. Please note that if you have care needs, this may be a telephone call rather than a face to face assessment. If you have no care needs, the assessment will be very light touch.
There are four cost elements that relate to extra care:
• Rent – this is of an affordable nature and is unlikely to exceed the Local Housing Allowance (LHA) for the local area. In Devizes for example the typical rent for a 2 bed flat is around £120 per week and slightly less for a single flat
• Service charge – this covers the cost of the cleaning and heating of the communal areas, the scheme manager, where relevant, fire safety, grounds maintenance etc. A typical service charge is between £30 and £55 per week and are largely Housing Benefit/Universal Credit eligible
• Core care cost – this charge pays for the 24 hour security of care and support. An approximate cost is £25 per week
• Individual care needs – this charge relates to planned care provided within the home such as assistance with washing, bathing, lunch preparation
